“A lot of people think that the bull is doing a “lip curl” like a mule deer does, to test the air to see if a doe is in estrous. However, hissing is a very aggressive posturing that bull elk will do, especially to protect territory, like a bedding area or a food/water source. I have seen bulls do this before on trail camera in the summer, when their antlers are still in velvet and they can’t fight.
